Imagine being on a fun school camp, surrounded by nature, when suddenly the weather turns wild and you find yourself completely cut off by rising floodwaters! That’s exactly what happened to a group of Year 12 students from North Lakes State College recently.
Here is a breakdown of their unexpected adventure and the amazing rescue that brought them home safely.
Caught in the Downpour
- The Setting: Almost 50 students and teachers were enjoying a school camp at the beautiful Mount Barney National Park in the Scenic Rim.
- The Surprise: Heavy rains suddenly drenched the south-east Queensland region.
- The Problem: The rapidly changing weather caused floodwaters to rise fast, blocking the road and making it impossible for the group to get back to their accommodation safely.
Calling in the Cavalry
- Emergency SOS: Around 5:00 PM, emergency services got the call that the 48 students and staff needed help.
- The Rescue Team: The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) swift water rescue crews teamed up with the State Emergency Service (SES).
- The Mission: Using a rescue boat, the crews carefully ferried the stranded students and teachers across the dangerous, flooded road.
- Mission Accomplished: By 10:00 PM, everyone was back on dry land!
A Very Smart Decision
One of the best parts of this story is how the school group handled the scary situation.
- Brad Moore from the QFD gave a huge shoutout to the teachers and students.
- Instead of panicking or trying to walk through the dangerous, rushing water, they stayed put.
- They realized it wasn’t safe to cross and waited patiently for professional help to arrive. This smart move prevented a bad situation from becoming a tragedy!
