Just three months after making headlines, the plans to build Australia’s very first Trump Tower have been completely scrapped.
The ambitious project was meant to bring a new level of glitz to the Gold Coast skyline, but local developers have pulled the plug. The reason? They claim the Trump brand has simply become too “toxic” to work with.
Here is a breakdown of what was planned and why it all fell apart so quickly.
The Grand Plan
When the deal was first announced in February by the Altus Property Group and the Trump Organization (managed by Donald Jr. and Eric Trump), it was billed as a massive luxury undertaking:
- Record-Breaking Height: The Trump International Hotel & Tower Gold Coast was set to be 91 stories tall, making it the tallest tower in Australia.
- Ultra-Luxury Features: It was designed to include a 285-room luxury hotel, premium residential apartments, and high-end restaurants.
- Exclusive Retail: The ground levels were slated for a sprawling, high-end retail plaza, all finished to strict Trump specifications.
The Sudden U-Turn
Despite the initial fanfare, the project hit a brick wall just 90 days in. The development immediately sparked local backlash upon announcement, with community members and local groups pushing back against the branding.
