Workplace drama happens everywhere, but when it hits the top ranks of local government, the anti-corruption watchdogs get involved. Right now, the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is shining a massive spotlight on the City of Parramatta Council.
Here is a simple breakdown of what is going on, who is involved, and why it matters.
Who is at the Center of the Storm?
The investigation focuses on Gail Connolly, the former Chief Executive Officer of the City of Parramatta Council.
Before this, she was actually a highly celebrated public servant. She had an impressive resume, holding big executive roles at Ryde City Council and Georges River Council. She took the top job at Parramatta back in April 2023, pulling in a hefty salary of over $500,000 a year.
However, things went south quickly, and the local councillors officially terminated her employment in October 2025.
What Are the Allegations?
The ICAC has kicked off public hearings to dig into some pretty serious claims made during her two-and-a-half-year tenure. The main allegations are that she:
- Subverted Hiring Protocols: Basically, ignoring the standard, fair rules that dictate how people should be hired in a government job.
- Purged the “Critics”: It is alleged that she actively pushed out employees who criticized her or didn’t agree with her leadership.
- Hired Her Friends: Instead of hiring the best people for the job through a fair process, she is accused of handing out cozy council jobs to her mates.
